Studio Fandam collaborated with London-based architect Levent Özruh on a research-driven design exploration centered around the vernacular housing of Türkiye’s Eastern Black Sea region. The project investigates traditional timber construction systems, spatial organizations, and joinery details characteristic of the area’s historic dwellings. Through comprehensive research—spanning academic studies, architectural documentation, and field observations—the studio catalogued a variety of vernacular housing typologies.
Studio Fandam's role included structuring the research process, modeling key examples in 3D, and analyzing materiality, construction logic, and spatial relationships. These documented insights served as the foundation for a generative design phase, where the team worked with Özruh to reinterpret vernacular forms through a contemporary lens.
Rather than replicating the past, the project seeks to activate vernacular wisdom as a toolkit for new spatial ideas—revitalizing traditional construction know-how into adaptable, modern architectural expressions. It stands as both a design inquiry and a cultural preservation effort.
